Former presidentJoe BidenHas been diagnosed with prostate cancer, his office said on Sunday.
Biden was seen by doctors last week after urinary symptoms and a prostate nod were found. He was diagnosed on Friday with prostate cancer, where the cancer cells had spread to the bone.
“Although this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer seems to be hormone sensitive that makes effective management possible,” his office said. “The president and his family assess treatment options with his doctors.”
Prostate cancers receive a score called a Gleason score that measures on a scale of 1 to 10 what the cancer cells look like compared to normal cells. The office of Biden said his score was 9, which suggests that his cancer is the most aggressive.
When prostate cancer spreads to other parts of the body, this often spreads to the bones. Metastasized cancer is much more difficult to treat than localized cancer, because it is difficult for medicines to reach all tumors and completely eradicate the disease.
However, when prostate cancer needs hormones to grow, as in the case of Biden, they can be susceptible to the treatment that robs the tumors of hormones.
Many political leaders sent Biden their wishes for his recovery.
PresidentDonald TrumpAn old political opponent, posted on social media that he was sad by the news and “We wish Joe a quick and successful recovery.”
The Vice President of Biden, Kamala Harris, said on social media that she kept him in the ‘hearts and prayers of her family today’.
“Joe is a hunter – and I know that he will take on this challenge with the same power, resilience and optimism who have always defined his life and leadership,” wrote Harris.
The health of Biden, 82, was a dominant care among voters during his time as president. After oneRampal debate performanceIn June, Biden left his bid for a second term during the re -election. Harris became the nominee and lost to Trump, a Republican who returned to the White House after an interruption of four years.
But in the past few days, BIDEN rejected concern about his age despite reporting in the new book “Original Sin” by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson that assistants had protected the audience against the extent of his decline while serving as president.
In February 2023, Biden had removed a skin lesion from his chest that was a basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer. And in November 2021 he had removed a polyp from his colon that was a benign but possibly pre-cancer-like lesion.
In 2022, Biden made a“Cancer Moonshot”One of the priorities of his administration with the aim of halving the death rate of cancer in the next 25 years. The initiative was a continuation of his work as a vice -president to tackle a disease that had killed his older son, Beau, whodied of brain cancerIn 2015.
His father, to announce the goal to halve the death rate of cancer, said that this could be an “American moment to prove ourselves and, to be honest, the world that we can really do big things.”
