Data Scientist

Primary goal

The Cleveland Guardians Baseball Research & Development (R&D) Group wants to hire data scientists at various experience levels, including senior, entry level and trainee/fellow. In this role you will collaborate with the rest of the R&D group to transform a wealth of scientific data (eg box scores, BAT/Ball/Player tracking, video, biomechanics) in an information pipeline that helps us to acquire better players, who improve players and to rust our coaches and players.

The Cleveland Guardians are very preferable that our teammates in Cleveland, Ohio live. Exceptional candidates can be taken into account for external activities. We can also be flexible on start dates.

Essential tasks and responsibilities

  • Build statistical and/or machine learning models to guide players’ assumptions, player development philosophy and decision -making of the Major League.
  • Development of models for the movements and forces that regulate the human movement and its subsequent impact on bat/ball paths.
  • Creating tools, prototypes and visualizations that connect R&D insights with coaches, players and baseball operations.
  • Complex ideas clearly communicate to both technical and non-technical public, including managers, coaches and players.

Data scientists in our R&D group apply quantitative methods to make the Cleveland Guardians better on the field. Depending on your skills and interests, your work can be:

Education and experience

  • Degree or proven experience in a quantitative field (eg statistics, computer science, mathematics, economy, biomechanics or engineering).
  • Skill in programming languages ​​such as Python or R for data analysis and modeling.
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex ideas to others in both written and verbal form.
  • Collaborative and able to succeed in a team -oriented environment.
  • Dedication to continuous learning and solving challenging problems.

Work skills

We are looking for different skills. If you have experience with one or more of the following areas, you can be who we are looking for:

Statistical modeling

  • Advanced statistical methods (eg fixed effects, random effects, generalized additive models).
  • Bayesian statistics and probabilistic programming languages ​​(eg Stan).
  • Database stales such as SQL.

Machine Learning and AI

  • Large language models (LLMS).
  • Deep Learning Frameworks (eg TensorFlow, Takkel).
  • High -dimensional and/or spatial data.

Domain -specific expertise

  • Research in a sports context (baseball is a plus).
  • Biomechanics software such as OpenSim and Visual3D.
  • Game theory applied in real-world contexts.
