After Islam Makhachev won the UFC welterweight title at UFC 322, he appears to be in line to fight former titleholder Kamaru Usman for his first title defense. But as of this writing, nothing has been set in stone as several top contenders like Michael Morales are publicly calling for a title shot.
Knockout artist Joaquin Buckley almost secured a title shot when a comeback fell short against Usman at UFC Atlanta last year. Since making the full-time move up to 170 pounds, Buckley has dominated the competition, picking up wins over Colby Covington and Stephen Thompson.
Nearly a full year after UFC Atlanta, Buckley remains without a booked fight as he looks to get back into the welterweight title picture. His patience is running out, as he recently expressed during a social media rant.
Joaquin Buckley urges UFC matchmakers to ‘do their job’ amid gridlocked divisions
In a recent one Instagram post, Buckley expressed his displeasure with the state of the UFC welterweight division.
“If I can get anyone active, I’ll say JDM. JDM and I would make good money,” Buckley said.
“Right now the division is at a standstill. The matchmakers know their job. They know better than me what they are doing, but right now they have the hottest division and there is no one fighting. You have Islam playing wrestling ball. You have Prates partying and going out.
“You’ve got Morales out there twerking and twirling. JDM is still in the house crying. You’ve got Leon missing again. Belal trying to sell War Meals. Ian Garry watching in the corner,” Buckley continued. “I don’t know what’s going on. What’s going on with the welterweight division?”(h/t MMA junkie)
