Manchester United remain linked with a host of top midfielders as the 2026 winter transfer window approaches.
Ruben Amorim is expected to reshape his midfield next year, hoping to eventually unleash a finely tuned engine room.
Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, thanks to their experience and brilliance, have been reliable at the heart of United’s midfield. Yet it is recognized that levels in the center of the park are still not where they should be.
However mobile and dominant Amorim wants his midfield to become, that vision can only be realized if he secures the dynamic profiles his system craves.
Joao Gomes: Casemiro’s heir
One of those midfielders is Joao Gomes of Wolverhampton Wanderers. A modern ball winner, Gomes is admired for his tenacity, ball recovery and ability to disrupt the opponent’s play. He is increasingly seen as the perfect heir to Casemiro.
Recent reports suggested United were working on a deal, with contacts being made and a winter switch discussed. While rumors of a January move have since been dismissed, a new claim that shows promise has been withdrawn.
United in pole position
Mark Brus, writing via Caught offsidehas revived the pursuit of Gomes by dismissing the biggest threat to the transfer. He explained:
“It is clear that Liverpool were also keeping a close eye on Gomes, although I have been reliably told that their interest has now cooled.
“So, for now at least, if anyone is going to sign Gomes, it will probably be United. Sources close to some of the game’s leading agents tell me there is a ‘strong appreciation’ for the Brazilian’s qualities at Old Trafford.”
Such admissions mean United are now not competing with anyone in this race, a scenario that should give INEOS the confidence to go ahead.
Bite, physicality and Premier League experience
With United’s midfield crying out for strength and physicality, Gomes can certainly provide that.
His Premier League experience, like summer signings Bryan Mbeumo or Matheus Cunha, suggests he could be an instant hit if signed.
Should a winter move materialize, Gomes would not only provide the immediate support United need, but also set the tone for the club’s expected midfield overhaul.
In addition to Gomes, United could also explore moves for Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson or Carlos Baleba as they look to finally solve their midfield puzzle.
