Reinforcements in central midfield are expected to be a top priority for United next summer, with several names already under consideration.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Gomes is now part of a shortlist that includes Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.
Major changes are expected to United’s midfield lineup with Casemiro’s contract nearing the end and Bruno Fernandes’ post-World Cup future unclear.
With Kobbie Mainoo looking for a move and Manuel Ugarte struggling to find form, United are likely to be active in the transfer market.
Due to PSR’s impact on next summer’s activities, a move for Gomes could be financially strategic.
Wolves remain winless in the Premier League, having picked up just two points from their first eleven games – a scenario in which no team has previously avoided relegation.
If Wolves drop to the Championship, they could be forced to offload players.
However, United won’t be alone in their search for midfield talent, with Liverpool and Manchester City expected to strengthen in that area too.
In 2022, Liverpool were linked with Gomes while he was still in Brazil.
When asked about the rumours, he said: “Liverpool is a team I would play for. I have the utmost desire to play.”
“Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream in football.”
This long-standing ambition to compete in Europe’s top tournament is a further incentive for United to secure a place in the top four.
After finishing in 15th place last season and falling short in the Europa League final, United are without European competition for the first time since 2014-15.
Amorim has indicated that the absence of midweek matches could be beneficial, leaving more time for training.
Yet it has reduced opportunities for fringe players, with Mainoo applying for a loan in August.
Having yet to start a league game this season, the young midfielder is expected to push for a loan in January, with Napoli showing interest.
The Daily Mail also noted that United are planning to sign a midfielder before the World Cup starts in June 2026, with the aim of avoiding high post-tournament fees.
A winter signing has also not been ruled out, with Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid among others being discussed.
