The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), in association with Golf summary and Syngenta, has announced the recipients of the Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards 2025 (ELGA).
Four golf course inspectors have been selected for their outstanding commitment to environmental stewardship, with seven additional runners-up recognized for their leadership in sustainable golf course management.
Since its founding in 1993, the The ELGA program has highlighted the supervisors and facilities all over the world that the standard for environmental responsibility in the golf industry.
Building on decades of progress, prices have evolved since 2018 to focus on best environmental management practices (BMPs) and four key sustainability areas.
Honoring excellence in environmental leadership
Every Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards category emphasizes a different aspect of responsible land and resource management:
- Award for communication and outreach: Recognizes supervisors who effectively communicate conservation goals and achievements to facility staff, golfers and the broader community, promoting understanding and engagement around environmental initiatives.
- Award for Sound Land Management: Honors efforts to promote soil health and reduce environmental impact through efficient use of pesticides and nutrients, as well as proactive pollution prevention strategies.
- Innovative Conservation Prize: Celebrates creative and progressive approaches to sustainability, highlighting projects that are redefining what is possible in golf course environmental management.
- Prize for the Conservation of Natural Resources: Recognizes leadership in water and energy conservation, along with exceptional natural area management and biodiversity initiatives.
Presented annually, the Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards highlight the golf industry’s continued shift toward sustainability and responsible land use.
With partnerships between GCSA, Golf summaryand Syngentathe program continues to demonstrate how thoughtful management can balance performance, aesthetics and environmental protection.
The winners of 2025
- Award for communication and outreach: Kevin Gossa 16 year GCSAA member, has served as an inspector at Sugar Creek Golf Coursea nine-hole public golf course, since 2009.
- Award for Sound Land Management: Jim Pavonetti, a Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) and 30-year member of the GCSAA, has served as superintendent at Fairview Country Club for 18 years.
- Innovative Conservation Prize: Robin Sadler, a 22-year GCSAA member, is in his fifth year at Mickelson National Golf Club. Its sustainable environmental initiatives include
- environmentally friendly algae control with solar energy;
- a grass clippings separator;
- water management that reduces usage by 13%;
- irrigation with reclaimed water to improve grass health and reduce environmental impact;
- biodiversity and sustainable honey harvesting; And
- reducing carbon and noise pollution switching to a lithium-powered fleet.
- Prize for the Conservation of Natural Resources: Justin Brimley, a member of the GCSAA for 14 years, served as superintendent at Crystal Springs for six years. Brimley’s specific environmental program is designed to protect the land and is certified by the Audubon Sanctuary Program and the National Wildlife Federation’s Habitat Control Program since 1998.
