The market is once again underestimating the filly Jewel Bandit in another big win.

Described as ‘still a bit green’ by jockey Michael Dee, Jewel Bandit still made a good impression to win her second race in as many starts.

Jewel Bandit won over 1000m on debut at Cranbourne on December 12 with Brad Rawiller aboard, but Michael Dee raced in the Brandt Colac Handicap (1100m) this time at Geelong.

The daughter of quality sprinter Pierata was purchased for $20,000 at the 2024 Adelaide Magic Millions Sale, with prize money now almost five times that amount after this win.

Jewel Bandit ($41) won by a close neck margin over the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained pair of Frostnip ($21) with Job Done ($4.20) a distant third.

Co-trainer Mark Kavanagh noted how a little money can mean a lot to owners – especially syndicates – and more can come from the filly.

“Twenty ‘thousand’, it just goes to show, dreams come true,” Kavanagh said.

“(He was) $21 at Cranbourne but he won like he should have been favorite and I was quite surprised where the market had this horse today and it turned out to be wrong,” Dee added.

“We had barrier one, so obviously we’re going to use the gate. We jumped very clean and I expected Faraway Dream to take the lead and they ended up outside later and (we) ended up behind the one we wanted to follow, so it worked out perfectly.”

Race favorite Miss Ole ($3.50) finished outside the placings in sixth place, five lengths clear of the winner.
