Jeremy Frimpong injury update

Jeremy Frimpong was taken off early in Liverpool’s win in Frankfurt, with the defender the latest to succumb to a soft tissue injury.

The Dutchman was in the starting line-up for only the fifth time this season, but lasted just 19 minutes after having to retire again with a hamstring injury.

After battling with his opponent in a forward attack, Frimpong then called for a stoppage of play while in possession and was subsequently replaced by Conor Bradley.

Frimpong will be further assessed upon the side’s return to Merseyside, but Slot offered an update after the Frankfurt game.

“I expect Jeremy Frimpong to be out for at least a few weeks now, expected, I’m not sure, but expected,” Slot told reporters at his post-match press conference.

“It’s a hamstring problem. He came back from a hamstring injury a few weeks ago, played one match for the national team and came back to us, and now unfortunately he had to leave.”

Slot then added of his selection: “Although people like to talk about us and think we have 25 to 30 first-team players, we almost always need one or two U21 players when we play 11 versus 11 in training.

“That is something I am aware of. There are still many games to be played, but we are a very good team, just like our competitors.”

It is not the first time this season that Frimpong has suffered a hamstring injury, with the 24-year-old previously missing the wins over Newcastle, Arsenal and the Netherlands matches in September.

He returned a month after his initial hamstring problems, and the same absence again would mean he would not be available until after the November international break.

Liverpool’s first win since the Merseyside derby came at a further cost amid concerns over Alexander Isak’s fitness, with Slot confirming the striker was substituted at half-time due to a groin complaint.
