India continued a historic chase in Navi Mumbai, beating Australia by five wickets to storm into the final of the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup. Chasing a mammoth 339, India reached 341 for 5 in 48.3 overs, sealing victory with nine balls to spare.
Australia had earlier amassed 338 in 49.5 overs, thanks to Phoebe Litchfield’s classy 119, Ellyse Perry’s 77 and Ashleigh Gardner’s quick 63. At one point Australia looked set for 360 but India pulled things back with a tight finish.
India’s response started shakily. Openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana fell cheaply, leaving the hosts struggling at 59 for 2 inside ten overs. But Jemimah Rodrigues took the lead with a calm and collected approach.
Jemima’s Master Class
Rodrigues scored a breathtaking unbeaten 127 off 115 balls, her maiden World Cup century, to guide India home with confidence. Her shot selection and timing kept the scoreboard ticking throughout the chase.
She found the perfect partner in captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who hit 89 in a 167-run partnership for the third wicket. Their stand not only steadied India but also turned the momentum firmly in their favour.
Even after Harmanpreet’s dismissal, Richa Ghosh (26) and Amanjot Kaur held their nerves and ensured India stayed ahead of the required rate. Jemimah completed the job in style, punching the air as the crowd erupted at the DY Patil Stadium.
Australia’s innings was built around Litchfield’s maiden World Cup ton. She added 155 runs with Perry before the Indian bowlers hit back, leading to a collapse from 220 for 2 to 243 for 5. That late comeback proved crucial in keeping the target within reach.
This win marks India’s first appearance in a Women’s World Cup final since 2017. They now face South Africa on Sunday, aiming to lift the trophy for the first time in history.
