The stunning six-run victory of India over England in the oval not only helped them to draw the Anderson-Detulkar-Trophy 2-2, but also led to a strong view from the legendary cricket player Sunil Gavaskar, both about CaptainCy and the player’s workload.
Gavaskar supports Shubman Gill as a future Captain All-format
Gavaskar praised the leadership of Shubman Gill during the five-match test series and suggested that the young person could soon see India in all formats.
“Rohit and Kohli are available for odis. They have not yet been selected. The selectors can look at Gill when the ODI series will come to Australia or West India,” Gavaskar said on Sony Sports.
He called Gill one of the most respected players in the team and praised his hunger for large scores.
“He got 269 in Edgbaston and still wanted more. He is not satisfied with a hundred or double hundred. He continues,” Gavaskar added.
“You play for your country”: Gavaskar’s difficult message about workload
Gavaskar also achieved the headlines for his no-nonsense version of the Workload Management debate, which was a hot topic in Indian Cricket.
Although he did not mention anyone directly, many thought it was a message aimed at Jasprit Bumrah, who played only three of the five tests.
“If you are going to collapse for people who talk about workload, you will never have your best players on the field,” Gavaskar told India today.
“Hello, you play for your country. Forget the pain and pains in your muscles.”
He continued to compare players with Jawans on the border.
“Do you think Jawans complain about the cold? They are there, ready to give their lives. It is an honor to play for India. Don’t take it lightly.”
Gavaskar also mentioned Rishabh Pant, who during the fourth test in Manchester hit with a broken base and called it a perfect example of courage and dedication.
“Look at Siraj. He played all five tests, walked in every day, gave everything. That is the spirit we need,” he said.
Bumrah’s absence in the spotlight
The Indian team had made it clear before the series that Bumrah would only play three tests to manage his fitness.
But some fans still hoped that he would return for the last game, especially with long holes between competitions. Instead, he was both tests from that India eventually won, Edgbaston and the Oval.
