Jason Varitek has made it abundantly clear that he wants to stay with the Boston Red Sox, but while his coaching future remains in limbo, his wife has been considering a change of scenery.
Catherine Varitek joined X on Tuesday afternoon and responded to fans asking for updates on her husband’s coaching contract, which expires after the 2025 season.
She emphasized her hope that her husband — the beloved former Red Sox captain who joined the full-time coaching staff in 2021 — would remain in Boston, but teased additional options and a potential city that would be hard to resist.
‘I hope they keep him here’ she wrotein response to Red Sox Digest host Jim Dalfino.
“These other job openings don’t really fit our family dynamic. Unless of course Atlanta calls, we have a house there, Tek has huge baseball ties there and GM is Greek… that would be epic!
“But that’s just me, what do I know,” she concluded.
The update comes just a week after MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported that a reunion between Varitek and the Red Sox was the “most likely outcome,” expecting Tek to return in the same role as last season: “game planning and run prevention coach.”
That same week, Varitek announced his desire to return to the club with which he spent his entire 15-year career, winning two World Series, including the Curse of the Bambino-crushing championship campaign in 2004.
“You have to see everything that happens,” he said during a radio appearance in Boston.
“Have I dropped everything I had to make this organization better? And the people you guide, coach and are a part of? Yes. Do I want to continue to do that? Yes. But I have to see where it all lies.”
Varitek added during the interview that he planned to meet with Red Sox President of Baseball Operations Craig Breslow that same day, but a week later his wife confirmed that progress had stalled.
“I have been patiently waiting for this myself…” she wrote on X in response to a fan clamoring for a Varitek expansion announcement.
Varitek has his roots firmly planted in Boston, and if the Red Sox went in a different direction, it would spark outrage among the fanbase.
But then again, it wouldn’t be the first time the organization parted ways with a fan favorite.
