Losses have been rare for Jannik Sinner in recent years. That is why when the Italian falls short, he attracts the attention of many people.
Jakub Mensik, last year’s Miami champion, upset the No. 2 player in the PIF ATP Rankings 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open on Thursday. This came directly from the semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open.
It was a year and a half ago that Sinner lost before the finals at two consecutive tournaments. It last happened in 2024 at Wimbledon and at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal (both quarter-finals).
Sinner is now 138-14 since the start of the 2024 season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, giving him an astonishing 90.8 win percentage in that span. For context, Novak Djokovic has the best ever winning percentage at tour level at 83.3 percent.
Since losing to Montreal in the quarter-finals in 2024, Sinner has played 19 tournaments and reached the finals in 15 of them, lifting 10 trophies. His five losses in the championship match were against Carlos Alcaraz.
So even though Sinner has now lost in consecutive events before the finals, that speaks to his consistency over the years. Mensik will play against Arthur Fils on Friday for a place in the Doha final.
