Carlos Alcaraz wins Australian Open 2026: numbers behind the historic victory of the world number one

The next piece of history for Alcaraz will be emulating Laver as only the second man in the Open era to achieve a calendar stroke: winning all four majors in the same year.

Asked about the opportunity, Alcaraz said: “It will be a big challenge.

“I just want one at a time. The next one is Roland Garros and every time I go there I feel very special.

“I don’t want to put pressure on myself to have to do it.”

Sinner, as has been the case in each of the past two seasons, appears to be his biggest barrier.

The Italian will have the chance to complete his own Grand Slam career at the French Open after losing last year’s epic to Alcaraz.

Alcaraz of Sinner has been crowned champion at each of the past nine Grand Slam tournaments since Djokovic won the 2023 US Open.

Despite Alcaraz splitting with former coach Juan Carlos Ferrero in December after seven years together, and Sinner’s loss to Djokovic in a thrilling five-set semi-final in Melbourne, their dominant reign does not appear to be coming to an end any time soon.

Djokovic praised Alcaraz after the final, saying: “The results are a testament to his already great career. He deserves all the praise he gets.

“He is already a legendary tennis player who has already left a big mark in the history books of tennis.

“Anything is possible in his case, there is no doubt about that.”
