Shanghai-Jannik Sinner made a solid start of his Shanghai Masters title defense and defeated Daniel Altmaier with 6-3, 6-3 on Saturday to avenge a loss at the French Open two years ago.
The victory extended the second ranked Sinner’s winning series to six games after his China Open title in Beijing on Wednesday.
“I knew before the competition it would be very difficult today,” said Sinner. “I didn’t have much time to adapt here. But it makes it even more special.”
Sinner had not played Altmaier since the German defeated him about five sets in the second round in Roland Garros in 2023 – when Sinner wasted two competition points.
Sinner’s third round opponent will be Tallon Griekspoor, which he leads 6-0 in career meetings.
Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from Shanghai because of a left ankle injury.
“Everything is different. It is much more humid and it can feel much more physical here,” Sinner said when he was asked to adapt from Beijing to Shanghai. “I tried to rest. But it is difficult after you have won a title. You have to have a great practice balance. It is clear that the priority is to feel as good as I can physically for the next.”
