Jannik Sinner continued to put together one of the biggest seasons of his career when he achieved his 21st career title at the China Open with a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victory over student ten.
Sinner’s victory marks his third title of 2025 after winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon earlier this year. The record of the Italian is now at 42-5 (89%) this year and he has reached the final in seven of the eight tournaments, including all four Grand Slams.
Only Carlos Alcaraz came close to the sinner on hard jobs, where the sinner wins 79 of his last 80 games on the surface against players next to the ATP NR.
Despite the couple that competes against different areas of opponents in different countries, this week further underlined how superior sinner and Alcaraz are for the rest of the Tour. A day before, Alcaraz beat Taylor Fritz to win his eighth title of the season in Tokyo.
In the aftermath of his American open defeat in New York, which led to the Italian lost to the Nr. 1 ranking he had kept since June 2024, Sinner said that he was planning to make himself more unpredictable in his matches against his rival life, although he tried to make those changes that could lead to more losses.
The 24-year-old has shown some of those adjustments this week, especially by implementing more dropshots. Although he was not as dominant as in many of his other recent tournament -runs and sets to Terence Atmane and Alex de minaur, Sinner still overwhelmed all opponents.
There is no rest for most of the best players in a debilitating season. The ATP tour continues to the Shanghai Masters, the Penultimate ATP Masters 1000 event, where Sinner Will has a first round bye. However, Alcaraz will not be present in China after withdrawn shortly after his victory in Tokyo to manage an ankle injury.
In the meantime, Gael Monfils has announced that he will retire after the 2026 season. Monfils, who became the oldest ATP champion in history in January and became 39 last month, enjoyed a celebrated 21-year career as one of the most charismatic players in the sport. The Frenchman reached a career-high ranking of No. 6 in 2016 and won 13 titles.
In the meantime, Sonay Kartal put together the best performance of her fast-growing career to survive the world No. 5 Mirra Andreeva over three debilitating sets, and won 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 after two hours and 25 minutes to reach its first WTA 1000 quarter finals in the China Open in Beijing.
The victory marks Kartal’s first defeat of a top 10 opponent, a statement result while increasing the ranking. Standing on just 5ft 4in (163 cm) in a sport that is dominated by strong, impressive athletes, is one of the most common questions about the career of Kartal or her game is too little to harass the elite. The level of Brit on Wednesday gave a convincing answer to those questions.
There were signs this week that Kartal was able to do such a result. She reached the fourth round in sizzling form and rolled through her first three games in Beijing without even getting close to dropping a set in a run with a 6-3, 6-0 demolition of WTA No. 20, Daria Kasatkina.
From the beginning, Kartal made life difficult for Andreeva, with the help of her consistency, movement and discipline to drag the Russian to long, debilitating exchanges and to force Andreeva to earn every point. But Kartal was also daring with her heavy top spin Forehand, opened the field and constantly searched for opportunities to attack. She showed the entire array of her game in the fight and won important points with drop -shots, agile Volleys while she used her backhand well.
After she had claimed for a remarkable upset, she remained compiled at the decisive moments and recovered impressively after a heavy second set to end the victory.
Kartal will then be confronted with the 26th seed Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals after Noskova beat Anastasia Potapova earlier on Wednesday.
