Jan 2026 Malaysian car sales down 29% – MAA – paultan.org

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has released vehicle sales data for the month of January 2026, during which a total of 64,298 units were delivered to customers. The latter figure is 29% lower compared to the 90,716 units registered in December 2025.

According to the association, the reduced sales volume in January 2026 is mainly the result of pre-purchases in December 2025, when the highest monthly volume in history was recorded (the previous record was 81,735 units in December 2024). This is not a new phenomenon, as the same thing happened when comparing January to December sales figures going back a few years.

On a year-over-year (YoY) basis, January 2026’s total is a whopping 27% higher compared to January 2025 (50,449 units), with the increase attributed to the spillover effect of new model launches that occurred towards the end of 2025.

For the month of February 2026, the association expects sales to remain moderate due to the shorter working month (17 days) due to the Chinese New Year holidays.

A total of 60,866 vehicles were produced at the manufacturing site of things last month, which is 6% more compared to the 57,450 units registered in January 2025.
