When Ruben Amorim was appointed as the new head coach of Manchester United, fans were excited to see how the Portuguese would integrate the club’s famous graduates, given his stellar track record in youth development during his time at Sporting CP.
The likes of Chido Obi, Harry Amass and Tyler Fredricson all made their first-team debuts under the new boss, with the Red Devils taking second place in the list of most minutes handed to teenagers.
This season, however, the picture was very different. There is hardly any academy involvement as United’s impressive youth record is in danger of being broken.
Amorim has cleared the air and there is a chance Shea Lacey can make a breakthrough at AFCON, but there is another academy talent who considers himself unlucky not to have been given a chance so far.
James Scanlon hasn’t caught Amorim’s attention
James Scanlon was on fire last season, scoring 22 times for both the U18s and U21s combined, while also registering eight assists.
Academy coaches were perplexed as to why Amorim had still not called him up, but his performances this season have shown he is not yet ready for the move.
The Gibraltar international played exclusively for Travis Binnion’s U21 side, scoring just one goal and two assists. He doesn’t look as comfortable as he did when he excelled for the U18s.
The 19-year-old would also like to play competitive senior football at club level The Daily MailINEOS is looking at a possible loan agreement in January.
Scottish teams, who have often loaned United stars such as ex-star Will Fish and Ethan Williams, are keeping tabs on the Leicester-born ace.
Taking out a loan is very logical
“Those to keep an eye on in January are Gabriele Biancheri, who is keen to test himself on loan, James Scanlon and Jayce Fitzgerald.
“Ethan Williams’ success in Scotland with Falkirk has a number of teams there looking closely at the Gibraltar international Scanlon.”
It’s clear that James Scanlon needs to start playing competitively, and the Scottish Premiership won’t be a bad shout.
Jason Wilcox and Under 21s boss Travis Binnion will hold a discussion about the versatile forward’s future, while loan manager Jonny Evans will be tasked with finding him a new temporary home.
