One of South America’s top talents today is making the move to St. Paul.
James Rodriguez has joined Western Conference club Minnesota United of the Western Conference until June 2026, the Loons announced Friday. Minnesota United also has a club option to extend his contract through December.
“I am very happy with this new chapter in my life,” said Rodríguez. “I hope to be my best so that I can bring joy to this city and to all the people who trust me. I look forward to meeting all the passionate Minnesota fans because I am also a passionate player who wants to give everything on the field and always win.”
Rodriguez has been one of the most entertaining attacking midfielders over the past decade, with 127 goals and 161 assists in 516 club appearances in all competitions. After starting his career with his native Envigado, Rodriguez later played for Banfield, FC Porto and AS Monaco before joining European giants Real Madrid in 2014.
He scored 29 goals in 85 games for Los Blancos, but was also loaned out to Bundesliga heavyweight Bayern Munich for two seasons. Rodriguez has also played for EPL outfit Everton, Brazilian club São Paulo and most recently Mexican side Club León.
Rodriguez continued to shine for the Colombian men’s national team, scoring 31 goals in 122 caps. He led the Cafeteros to the 2024 Copa America final before Colombia lost 1-0 to Argentina.
Minnesota United reached the Western Conference semifinals last fall before losing 1-0 to San Diego.
