The Jaecoo J5 is now available to book in Malaysia for an estimated RM120,000. It will be the new entry-level Jaecoo, which sits below the popular C-segment J7.
While Thailand and Indonesia will get it as an EV, the Malaysian car will have a 1.5-litre SQRE4T15C turbo petrol engine producing 147 PS/210 Nm, a CVT, front-wheel drive, a 0-100 km/h time of 10.2 seconds, a top speed of 175 km/h and a curb weight of 1,439 kg. Fuel consumption is reported to be 7.5 liters per 100 km (13.3 km per liter) and the range is 680 km on a full 51 liter tank.
With a length of 4,380 mm, 1,860 mm wide and 1,650 mm high and a wheelbase of 2,620 mm, the J5 is more than 10 mm longer between the axles than the Honda HR-V and Chery Tiggo Cross, and 20 mm longer than the wheelbase of the Proton X50. Comparing the J5 to its larger sibling, the J7 is 4,500mm long, 1,865mm wide and 1,680mm high and has a wheelbase of 2,672mm.
The J5 has LED projector headlights, 235/55R18 Chaoyang Aggressor tires and conventional door handles, unlike the J7’s recessed pop-out units. It also has a multi-link rear suspension that is rare in this segment, although there are still standard MacPherson struts up front. Together with the double-glazed windshields, Eco/Normal/Sport modes and a body stiffness of 23,500 m/degrees, this thing should be a good long-distance guy.
Inside, the Jaecoo J5 gets a panoramic glass roof, a 50W wireless phone charger, an 8-inch widescreen instrument cluster, a 13.2-inch 2K touchscreen, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, a 540 camera and a built-in karaoke function including a mixer (microphones sold separately, says Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia).
Interestingly, the company is marketing the J5 as a pet-friendly vehicle (TUV-certified, no less) – in addition to antibacterial and scratch-resistant seat covers, there can be accessories like pet nets, pet mats and carriers to make your furry friend feel right at home.
There’s also Level 2+ ADAS – in addition to the usual stuff it has Curve Speed Assistance, so the vehicle automatically slows down around corners if you have ACC enabled. The luggage compartment holds 480 liters; fold down the rear seats for 1,180 liters.
Not much longer, we’re sure. The J5’s competitors include the RM76k-81k Perodua Traz, the RM89k-100k Chery Tiggo Cross, the RM86k-109k Proton X50, the RM117k Chery O5 and the RM116k-144k Honda HR-V. Share your opinion with us!
