The soon-to-be-launched Jaecoo J5 in Malaysia has now been fully revealed, giving a clear idea of what this B-segment SUV has to offer. Positioned as the most affordable model in the Jaecoo range, the J5 is expected to be offered at an estimated price of under RM120,000, making it a new challenger in an increasingly fierce segment.
Unlike the Thai and Indonesian markets which will receive an electric version, the Jaecoo J5 for Malaysia will use a 1.5 liter SQRE4T15C turbo petrol engine. This engine produces 147 hp of power and 210 Nm of torque, mated to a CVT transmission and front-wheel drive.
Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 10.2 seconds and the top speed is 175 km/h. The weight of this vehicle is 1,439 kg, while fuel consumption is estimated at approximately 7.5 liters per 100 km, with a driving distance of up to 680 km with a 51 liter fuel tank.
In terms of dimensions, the Jaecoo J5 is 4,380 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,650 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. This makes it slightly longer in wheelbase than the Honda HR-V and Chery Tiggo Cross, and beats the Proton X50 by about 20mm. Compared to its older brother, the Jaecoo J7 is also larger with a length of 4,500 mm and a wheelbase of 2,672 mm.
The exterior of the J5 features LED projector headlights, 18-inch wheels with 235/55R18 tires and conventional door handles unlike the J7’s hidden units. Interestingly, this SUV is equipped with a rear suspension multi link which is rare in this segment, combined with MacPherson suspension at the front.
Additional features such as a front window double glazing, The Eco, Normal and Sport driving modes and a body stiffness of 23,500 m/degree are expected to provide good comfort over long distances.
Inside are a panoramic glass roof, a 50W wireless phone charger, an 8-inch digital gauge display and a 13.2-inch main touchscreen with 2K resolution. The infotainment system supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, equipped with a 540-degree camera and a built-in karaoke function.
Jaecoo also promotes the J5 as a pet-friendly vehicle, complete with TUV certification. In addition to antibacterial and scratch-resistant seat covers, there are additional accessories such as nets, cushions and dog baskets to ensure the comfort of pets during the trip.
From a safety perspective, the Jaecoo J5 is equipped with a Level 2+ driver assistance system, including the Curve Speed Assistance function that allows the vehicle to automatically brake in corners when the adaptive cruise control is activated. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 480 liters and can be increased to 1,180 liters when the rear seats are folded down.
