Jack must attack Redcliffe

Veteran coach Wayne Waltisbuhl thinks Jacks Fyre (Major Bronski) can get his little stable back-to-back harness race wins on Wednesday evening at Redcliffe for the first time in years.

The bay gelding managed to score more than 1780 meters in ‘The Triangle’ last Thursday, with Adam Richardson taking him to a victory of almost four meters.

Jacks Fyre returns to Redcliffe Peninsula Harness Racing and Sporting Club on Wednesday, stepping up to 2040 metres.

The 68-year-old Waltisbuhl has had a long journey to get Jacks Fyre fit and ready for the races, but he seems to have found his feet this season.

In 17 attempts in 2025, he won twice and placed five more times.

The two wins were the Sandy Creek-based conditioner’s first since the 2021 campaign.

“I have a thing for pacers, I love them,” Waltisbuhl said.

“I like to see what I can create with a horse and what happens in the end.”

Last week, 36-year-old Richardson fired Jacks Fyre to the front of the field in the early exchanges after starting from a front-row draw.

Veteran rider Waltisbuhl was keen to see his six-year-old progress in his races and was delighted when Richardson was able to hold the front and score.

“I told him last week to launch,” Waltisbuhl said of his pre-race conversation with Richardson.

Jacks Fyre’s other win this year came at Redcliffe at the end of March, when youngster Jack Chapple guided him out of first grade.

Waltisbuhl – who raced in harness racing earlier in his career – thinks more can come from Major Bronski’s son.

“He’s not an easy horse to ride,” Waltisbuhl said.

“This horse is not Leap To Fame, but it is a handy, nice and strong horse.

“I expect him to give this race a real shock on Wednesday because he doesn’t surrender.

“He’s only going to make this horse better and better. He does have some scope.”

Waltisbuhl encourages his drivers to talk to Jacks Fyre to keep him comfortable during the ride and during the pre-race process.

In a small field of six, Richardson will start from the front two, while Maywyn’s Mighty Mac is one of the other top contenders in the enduring event.

Waltisbuhl enjoyed success earlier in his career with horses such as Rorschach and Go Atom, with the duo winning 17 races together.
