Jack Della Maddalena’s coach Ben Vickers has responded to claims his student was injured during the main event of UFC 322.
Last weekend, Jack Della Maddalena failed in his attempt to successfully defend his UFC welterweight championship against Islam Makhachev. Although he did solid defensive work on the ground, he was simply unable to pose a real offensive threat to Islam – and ultimately lost by decision.
Some have since suggested that it appeared that Jack Della Maddalena had been injured, especially due to the extent to which he was wincing on the ground. Others simply felt that Makhachev was doing a great job of keeping him in check, and that it probably caused JDM significant pain anyway.
In a recent interview, Jack Della Maddalena’s coach Ben Vickers said the following on the subject.
Jack Della Maddalena’s coach responds to injury rumours
“If you commit to arguing, it doesn’t matter what the fuck is wrong with you – if anything is wrong with you,” Vickers told Submission Radio. “We’re not going to confirm or deny anything. When we decided to step into the cage, we believed Jack could win that fight. That’s all I’m going to say. There are no excuses here. We didn’t do enough that day to get the job done, and that’s all.”
“The plan was to probably be further out than that range, and then change positions a lot,” Vickers said. “I think when the lead leg is compromised early, it hurts the game plan a little bit when it comes to changing positions and things like that. I commend them for their game planning against us. They obviously studied a lot of tape. They had an answer to the head-hand defense with the head kicks and things like that.”

Della Maddalena is not in the business of making excuses. What he wants to do is go back to the drawing board, figure out where he went wrong and rebuild himself to reach championship level again – no matter how long it takes.
