Jack Congdon went at one of the worst times in the world of MMA. He had just finished his second amateur fight in November 2019 and wanted to make some big noise the following year. However, there was one problem: the world would not have much MMA in 2020 – certainly not in the regional scene.
As a result, Condgon remained at a crossroads and one that left him without much direction.
“I had two amateur fights when I came from the university before Covid and then Covid happened and I couldn’t fight for about a year and a half,” said Congdon. “Probably that first year of Covid, it was as if you could train, but they wanted you to wear a mask – and that is clearly horrible and ridiculous. So you try to get to the gym and try to do what you can do, but there are really no competitions.”
Although many hunters considered giving up then, and many of them actually did it. That would never be the case for Congdon. Although it was suddenly a more difficult dream to chase, it was one of the few things that he had to look forward to in a difficult time.
“I don’t think I was really ready to like it. MMA was probably the biggest thing I had,” he said. “When I could train and when I was there, it was as if I had my mind well. And it stopped me too depressed and too low at a time that, you know, there was not much good going on.”
It wasn’t long before things were going again for Congdon. He came out hard with an audience at Cage Titans that was as raw as always.
“When I finally returned to the first local card they had after Covid, the energy there was insane,” Congdon explained. “You could see that everyone had worked together for almost two years and the menu was wild. I was like the fifth fight or something and it was back to back-to-back-to-back finishes. And the energy by the time I got there was crazy.”
And there was no look back at “.50 Cal” Congdon. He would not only win that next fight, but nine of his next ten afterwards – earn him a shot at the Dana White Contender Series this Tuesday. You can catch him that chance gets EST at ESPN+ at 8 p.m. while he wipes out with Jean-Paul Lebosnoyani.
