Ja Morant has clearly shown improved leadership and commitment while sidelined with a calf injury. The Memphis Grizzlies have won five of their last six games and moved to 9-12. The shift comes after early-season turmoil that saw Morant suspended one game from the team in October, which subsequently led to speculation about his future with the franchise.
Morant was suspended after his critical comments to reporters following an Oct. 31 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. He has been out since mid-November with a calf injury after wrestling 12 matches to start the season.
During Sunday’s win over the Sacramento Kings, Morant was engaged off the bench for the entire game. Tuomas Iisalo and teammates noted his active coaching presence and improved communication. Iisalo emphasized Morant’s value even when he was injured.
“It’s a huge advantage for us,” Iisalo said. “He asks things of me and gives some tips for the guys. Overall, really good communication, really good leadership, both from him and Jaren (Jackson Jr.) and our experienced guys.”
Jaren Jackson Jr. confirmed Morant’s active involvement.
“He’s a coach right now,” Jackson said. “He’s coaching, just like ‘Twelve-Time’ in AAU. He knows the game. He’s a point guard. So they see the floor really well. And he just says what he sees and talks us through things.”
Despite the recent improvements, Morant remains subject to trade speculation across the league. His contract is for $87 million over the next two seasons, and rival executives view his trade value as low due to health concerns and controversy.
The Grizzlies have rebounded from a 4-11 start and are currently in playoff position in the Western Conference. They are 3.5 games behind the sixth seed.
Morant’s initial return timeline was scheduled for early December. Teams like Sacramento and the Minnesota Timberwolves continue to monitor his situation closely.
