His attack was already outside the field. It was fourth and one and the team of Curt Cignetti was on his own 50-Yard line in a TIE game in the first quarter.
During a Time -out of Illinois, Cignetti waved the attack back to the field for a discussion. Moments later he sent the point team outside and it seemed that the Hoisiers would kick for a second straight possession.
For a moment the point team found on the couch when the attack raced in the formation of the lefthash of the 48-Yard line.
Roman Hemby took a first down with a two-year run in the middle. Although a modest profit, it turned out to be the biggest game of the game.
After moving the sticks, Indiana only needed two plays to cross 50 meters and take a 14-7 lead against no. 9 Illinois.
It was an advantage that the 19th -arranged Hoosiers had never killed.
Under the leadership of Quarterback Fernando Mendoza, De Hoosiers scored 56 of the last 59 points of the game. Iu drove to a 63-10 routing of the Fighting Illini on Saturday evening.
A night years old, Cignetti and Indiana had an excellent opportunity to make a statement for a national audience. The national perception was that the 11-win season of Indiana in 2024 mainly emerged from the relatively simple schedule.
Doubt disappeared quickly when Indiana seized Momentum early, making the top 10 illinois seem excess and unworthy of the field. Whether it scored on seven consecutive discs or winning the Ground Battle 312-2, the Hoosiers demonstrated the total control everywhere.
The 63-point outburst of Indiana marked the highest point total ever by a Big Ten team against an AP-top-10 opponent. It was a version that underlined the total command of the Hoosiers on both sides of the ball.
Illinois did not have answers at any level. Like many of the audience, the Illini looked stunned when the game quickly slipped away from them.
De Hoosiers gathered 579 meters from total attack, while the defense suppressed Illinois and held the visitors to only 161 meters.
While Indiana’s side activity broke out after every scoring ride, Illinois wore the appearance of a team that had nothing to give.
“We broke their will,” said Cignetti Postgame.
Neither Cignetti nor his players will fully admit it, but Indiana played the game of Saturday night with something to prove.
Cignetti is not nearly as brutal as he was last season. His consistent attempt to silence doubters, however, rubbed his players.
“We like to block the noise here,” said Cornerback d’Angelo Ponds. “We don’t really tune in to that, but we definitely know what they said about us.”
Ponds quickly acknowledged how outsiders could reject Saturday’s dominance. He and his teammates are not surprised by lingering outside skepticism. Their focus will continue to be solved on performance, instead of external opinions.
Saturday night was a coming-out party for Indiana football in more than one way. Bloomington was full of high expectations all week awaiting IU football.
For years, when a top 10 team visited Bloomington, opposite fans often filled half of the stadium. Against the break, Indiana fans were usually back at the tailgates, the game had already forgotten it.
That did not happen on Saturday.
A program record 56,088 fans filled Memorial Stadium with something that has not been seen in years: Proud in the football of Indiana.
“It was great, just to hear the crowd roar,” said Ponds. “It was just surrealistic.”
Ranking was hardly a subject of interest while playing non-conference. The consensus was that Indiana would get the chance to earn his ranking in week 4 against Illinois.
Now that the Primetime -Tilt ended in favor of his team, Ponds believes that his team is one of the best.
“We deserve to be in the top 10,” he said. “We proved that today.”
Apart from the ranking, Indiana Football not only proved that last year’s dominance was not a coincidence – it offered a glimpse of the powerhouse Curt Cignetti building.
Beyond are the days of celebrating the tailgate win and treating the football season as a warming for basketball.
Bloomington is officially on the University Football Card – and with Cignetti at the helm, perhaps only the beginning has been on Saturday evening.
Indiana didn’t go for it alone. It took over.
