IU football is 6-0 and poised for a significant rise in the national polls after Saturday’s win against No. 3 Oregon at Autzen Stadium.
The first College Football Playoff rankings won’t be released until early November, but several national media outlets have updated their CFP projections after the week seven games.
Here’s where the Hoosiers stand in the national picture after Saturday’s win in Eugene:
ESPN.com – Heather Dinich
Dinich has the Hoosiers at No. 3 in her updated CFP projections among Ohio State and Miami (FL):
Why they could be here: The Hoosiers just earned the nation’s best win by beating Oregon at home, where the Ducks had won 18 straight games. Indiana’s defense looked legit, and the Hoosiers have a hopeful Heisman quarterback in Mendoza. IU has now won three straight against Big Ten opponents, including back-to-back road wins against Iowa and Oregon. The selection committee would likely keep the Hoosiers from a higher spot at this point, as half of their wins came against Old Dominion, Kennesaw State and FCS Indiana State.
CBSSports.com – Brad Crawford
Indiana checks in at number 5 in the CFP projections on CBSSports.com:
5. Indiana: After beating Oregon on the road and “breaking the Ducks’ will” on the defensive side of the football, as Curt Cignetti said, the Hoosiers will be an overwhelming favorite to finish undefeated the rest of the way en route to likely facing Ohio State in the Big Ten title game. With two wins over top 10 teams this season, the Hoosiers’ current resume is as good as any in the country.
Sports Illustrated – Bryan Fischer
Sports illustrated has the Hoosiers as the projected No. 3 seed in its updated CFP projections:
Indiana had never had a road win against a top-five team … until Saturday in one of the toughest places to play in all of sports. Curt Cignetti won the 2024 national team coach of the year, but he may have a reason to compete again given how much better the Hoosiers are as they look at a potential 12-0 regular season.
The Athletic – Scott Daughterman
Indiana comes in at number 3 in Athletic’s latest CFP projections:
Any questions about the viability of last year’s CFP in Indiana are meaningless this year. The Hoosiers are better in every area this fall and proved that in Oregon.
