San Juan, Puerto Rico – while another basket had fallen in front of his bank, coach Darian Devries, Indiana, screamed his head in bewilderment.
His team suddenly found himself a few minutes in the second quarter 44-21.
It was a low point for Indiana. In the first of two games against the Serbian professional team Mega Superbet, there was no answer for the length. Devries had already taken his two assigned time -outs half in the first quarter without happiness.
“I was more worried, just like how we fell 44 to 21,” said Devries. “I just thought we were a bit away and some things on both ends of the floor.”
Tough shots continued to fall on one side, while the other looked like it had a lid on the edge. In Roberto Clemente Coliseum on Saturday evening, Mega Superbet looked out as a team that had experience together playing; Indiana looked incoherent.
Despite the crooked score at that time, the intensity of Indiana never staggered. There was never a time when the Indiana Bench looked defeated. Frustration was mounted, but there was still hope that a turnaround turned.
Suddenly Indiana turned the switch.
Senior attacker Reed Bailey rode a 6-0 run to start the comeback. However, that was not where the Hoisiers ended their search. A 14-4 run to end the first half gave Indiana Momentum in the dressing room despite following 48-35.
“I like the fact that we really fought hard to climb back into the game,” said Devries. “We went to the dressing room in the break with a much more manageable situation than falling 24 hours.”
With momentum and fresh legs, Indiana came from the rest room from the rest room. De Hoosiers started half a 14-1 point to bind the match to 49 and never looked back.
Indiana almost doubled his score of the first half in the third quarter and defeated Mega Superbet 32-11 to take the lead forever.
During this period there were few times a member of the Indiana bank. At one point, every person stood on the bank – players, coaches and employees – for every defensive possession.
All in all, Indiana went on a stunning 70-19 run to make a shortage of 23 points in a victory of 93-71.
Although some people had scoring outbursts in the second half, it was a team effort for the whole way.
From diving for loose balls to temperature lifting after whistles, Indiana checked a match that seemed lost in the opening minutes. They dictated the pace, remained compiled by Chippy Moments and never let their early shortage define the rest of the night.
“I just love the way they coincide, buried and fought harder and not tried to do it themselves,” said Devries. “I like the way they merge.”
For Devries, the summer trip was about excursions and the experiences that the team did together. Basketball would become the senior during this experience. However, the two merged on Saturday evening.
“I think they have learned a lot from the wind in the wind in the wind,” Devries said with a smile. “They could pull it out.”
It may have been a tongue-in-cheek comment from Devries, but the point is. So far there had never been an adversity with the group, but they could overcome it together.
The perfect mix of activities on and off-court during this trip could have contributed considerably to the Seaback of Indiana on Saturday. However, the growth of the team of the floor can cause a momentum for a Scrappy group three months before the regular season.
It was an exhibition in August, but comebacks like Saturday have the potential to help the team on the road.
There will probably be times this season when Indiana is in a hole early. Now, with shared conviction, the team can point out a time when they united and wanted to victory.
“We just keep together when things become difficult,” said Senior Guard Lamar Wilkerson. “We are better in numbers, so we have followed and brought our physicality.”
What started with Devries who is confused in his head, can ultimately be the time when his team found his identity.
