Kane Williamson ends his T20I career on a high

Widely regarded as one of the most composed and technically gifted players of his generation, Williamson captained New Zealand in 75 T20 Internationals and led the team to two T20 World Cup semi-finals (2016 and 2022) and the 2021 T20 World Cup Final, where he played a captain’s knock of 85 runs. His calm leadership, tactical acumen and consistency with the bat earned him worldwide respect, both on and off the field.

In his retirement statement, Williamson said the decision came after careful consideration, stressing it was the “right time” for both himself and the team.

“It’s something I’ve enjoyed being a part of for a long time and I’m so grateful for the memories and experiences,” said Williamson. “This is the right time for myself and the team. It gives the team clarity on the progress of the series and ahead of their next big focus which is the T20 World Cup.

“There is so much T20 talent there and the next period will be important to get these boys into cricket and get them ready for the World Cup. Mitch is a brilliant captain and leader, he is really coming into his own with this team. Now is their time to take the BlackCaps forward in this format and I will be supporting them from afar.”

“I care so much for this team,” he added. “The BlackCaps is a special place that you want to give yourself to and get the most out of yourself. It’s a journey and an endeavor, and that’s what I love about the international game and this environment. I will continue to keep the lines of communication open with Rob and NZC, who have given me tremendous support throughout.”
