The big battle of Karen Khahanov has reduced it to a top 10 of a top 10 this North -American summer.
After reaching his second ATP Masters 1000 Championship match in Toronto, the 29-year-old is now open in the quarterfinals in the Cincinnati. Where he records Alexander Zverev on Wednesday. As Khachanov Triumph, he will take another important step to return to the top 10 in the PIF ATP ranking list for the first time since June 2023, was something he told Atptour.com one of his biggest goals.
Khachanov, a sevenfold titlist at Tour level, also broke his favorite tennis rivement in history and revealed how he pushed early in his career through setbacks.
What is your favorite ATP tournament to play and why?
I would say Monte-Carlo is one of my favorites. The site, the hotel, the event, clay courts in the spring. The only thing is that we sometimes miss well there. Then Paris-Bercy of course. [Winning the title] There was one of the biggest memories in my career. The midfield in the old Arena was one of the most beautiful. The atmosphere was one of the best indoors.
What is your favorite tennis rivement?
Absolutely Rafa [Nadal] and Roger [Federer]. Everything started with them. Then Novak [Djokovic] got into this duo and started to have crazy rivalry with both, but I think everything started [Roger and Rafa]. I remember those competitions in Rome and Madrid on Clay, with Wimbledon and Roland Garros. Some really epic competitions.
Who is your biggest rival?
With Novak I played quite a few matches and managed to beat him once in this match in Paris when he was number 1. I would say too [Daniil] Medvedev. We have played a few times this year and had good matches in the past. Always exciting, tough competitions.
What is the largest you have pursued?
My biggest goal is to try to be back in the top 10, where I could break through two years ago before I was injured. The moment I was injured at the moment, and that struck me after I couldn’t fight for three and a half months. But that is not an excuse, it is a reality and I think I am motivated, I am pumped to achieve my goals. I keep haunting.
With regard to events, it is certainly a dream to win a Grand Slam. I still want to win a Masters 1000 again. But at the end of the day, when you put it in perspective, if you are in the top 10 or even higher, you have had absolutely good results in the larger tournaments, so that is all connected.
It’s all true: Every moment everything means:
What is the greatest difficult or adversity that you have overcome?
I would say I have a little success early. When I was 22, I won a Masters 1000, one of the biggest titles, against Novak, and I had the feeling: “Whoa, I’m there.” Although I am mentally strong in a certain way, I felt that the following year was not at the beginning of the year what I hoped or thought it would be. That pushed me a bit away and showed me that I had to settle, to keep working on my goals and that not everything would just come out of the sky.
This moment was one of the most difficult: understanding, growing up, being more mature and understanding myself and tennis more. Even after that it took me a few more years to get really good results in Grand Slams and at the Olympic Games.
What is the coolest that you were able to do off the field, purely because you are a tennis player?
I would just say travel. The tour forces us to travel, which I don’t complain about. Tournaments in different cities and countries around the world. I wouldn’t travel as much if I didn’t do what I am doing now.
