BOLOGNA, Italy – Italy remains the kings of the Davis Cup – and didn’t even need Jannik Sinner this time.
Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli were the stars for the Italians without the absent Sinner, both winning their singles matches to take an unassailable 2-0 lead over Spain in Sunday’s final.
It is the fourth Davis Cup title for Italy and a third in a row. The last country to win three consecutive titles was the United States, which won five in a row from 1968 to 1972.
Second-ranked Sinner, who led Italy to the premier men’s tennis team trophy for the past two years, decided not to play this week, preferring to prepare for next season. Lorenzo Musetti, number 8, also did not play.
Italy didn’t need them and won all three matches 2-0 at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna this week, after eliminating Austria in the quarter-finals and Belgium in the semi-finals.
Spain was also without star Carlos Alcaraz in the top flight.
In Sunday’s final, Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-4 before Cobolli fought back to beat Jaume Munar 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 and take the winning point, as he has done all three times this week. Cobolli dropped his racket to the ground and was lifted into the air by his Italian teammates.
Italy first won the Davis Cup in 1976 and went on to win in Malaga in 2023 and 2024. This is the first time the country has won on home soil.
Six-time champion Spain played in the title match for the first time since 2019.
