South -African superstar Ab de Villliers has supported the decision to name Shubman Gill as the ODI captain of India prior to the upcoming Australian tour. He noted that there was no guarantee that Stalwarts Rhit Sharma and Virat Kohli would continue until the next 50-over World Cup, making Gill’s appointment a wise choice.
The BCCI announced the squadrons on Saturday 4 October for the Drie-Match ODI and five match T20i series in Australia, which started on October 19. Main selector Ajit Agarkar explained the change in leadership in the 50-over format, which states that it offers gill more time to plan and prepare for the World Cup 2027.
“It is no guarantee that both will be there for that next world cup. That is perhaps part of the thinking when they made Shubman Gill the Odi captain. He has a good chance to be there, Young Gun, in incredible form and a fantastic leader. I think this was the right move to still have the Villiers,” said youte.
“Shubman Gill will learn from two of the most experienced Indian players of all time, high -quality, legendary players. It will be fantastic for Shubman to have them nearby. It will be for the Tour that is actually around the corner. So we will pop up for a high entertainment and a great series,” he added.
When a fan asked if Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma would play in the next World Cup, the former South African skipper noted that much would depend on their form and consistency, because the 2027 tournament is two more years away. In particular, Kohli and Rohit were the top two run scorers at the World Cup 2023, but their efforts went in vain when India suffered a heartbreaking loss for Australia in the final.
“They are on the ODI side. I think that is the reason that they are hanging on, to play another world cup for Team India. It’s great to see. Whether it is going to happen, I don’t know. To be honest? Form or do they play enough cricket?
“Still far away. It’s not that far, but it’s not that close. There is a lot of cricket to play and keep shape. They have to score runs and that should be the message of the selectors. They are as big as legends, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will come in my team and I will play them,” he added.
De Villiers added that although Kohli and Rohit are confronted with severe competition, they can still offer valuable experience and guidance to Gill and the rest of the team in the 50-over format.
“But the kind of competition team that India has nowadays and the quality, these two know that they have to go out and score runs. It would be a big asset for Team India in the world cup to have them there. But the priority is to score runs. I have no doubt that they will come and we will see them at the 2027 World Cup.
