Scott Parker watched as Saturday’s Newcastle 2 Burnley 1 match ended.
Eddie Howe’s side deservedly won the match, although the margin of victory should have been three or four goals.
However, Scott Parker hailed ‘an incredible performance’ from his Burnley side.
The former United midfielder said it was ‘probably our best performance of the season’.
Burnley had a chance in the first quarter of the match and forced a series of corners, but in reality they created very few chances throughout the match.
When Bruno Guimaraes scored straight from a corner after half an hour, Newcastle had already seen a number of chances begging for help.
Anthony Gordon coolly fired home from the penalty spot just before half-time and with Burnley already reduced to ten men when Elanga was through on goal and brought down, it looked to be a more than comfortable victory.
However, Burnley dug in and worked hard during the second half, while Newcastle United failed to finish the game as the chances went away. Burnley were given some late hope when they scored from the penalty spot in extra time.
Scott Parker speaking after Newcastle 2 Burnley 1:
“It was an incredible achievement for us.
“That was probably our best performance of the season.
“A lot has been learned over the course of the season and today, how the dynamics of the game went, there were some hammer blows.
“We performed well, but sometimes we lacked a certain intensity in our game.
“We had to defend, we had to be brave, we got right back into the game and we had a chance [to equalise] also.
“The most important thing now is that these players have set a bar with this performance.
“It’s a young group that is developing and today’s performance is what I want us to look like.”
