Two women were killed by gang and a man was killed in an attack near a popular UNESCO World Heritage Location in South India, according to the police.
The two women – an Israeli tourist and an Indian homestay operator – were staring with three male tourists near a lake in Hampi, Karnataka, when they were attacked by a group of men on Thursday evening, police -Supperintendent Ram Arasiddi told Reuters.
Arasiddi said the attackers pushed the men in the Tungabhadra River channel before they rape the women.
Two of the men, one of them American, survived and the body of the third man was restored on Saturday morning, he said.
“Five people – two women and three men – were attacked near Sanapur,” said Arasiddi.
“Two of them are foreigners, an American [man]And another woman from Israel. ”
The police have arrested two of the men of the attack and an investigation is underway, said Arasiddi.
The police believe that the men have followed the group.
According to witness statements from one of the women, the group was the star viewer near a temple in Sanapur when three men arrived on a motorcycle and asked them where they could get gas.
While a member of the group gave them instructions, one of the three men demanded 100 rupees ($ 1.29) of the tourists.
“Because the homestay operator did not know them, she told them they had no money,” the police said.
“When the men repeatedly insist, one of the male tourists gave them 20 rupees.
“Then the three men reportedly started to argue.”
The body of one of the male tourists was later found in the Tungabhadra channel in the Koppal district in Karnataka.
A case is registered at the national police station of Gangavathi under sections with regard to extortion, theft, rape and attempted murder.
The victims receive medical treatment in a government hospital, the police said.
Hampi, an old village in the South Indian state Karnataka, is the home of countless ruins and temples from the Vijayanagara -Rijk. It was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1986.
In a position on X, Minister President of Karnataka Siddaramaiah wrote: “The attack and rape of an Israeli citizen and owner of Homestay is a very horrible act.
“As soon as the incident was reported, I obtained information from the relevant police, I conducted a thorough investigation and instructed them to quickly identify the perpetrators.
“The police have arrested two accused in connection with the case and continues the investigation.”
Attacks on women in India attracted international attention last year after the brutal rape homicide of a junior arts in a hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata.
The attack led to national indignation and protests on a lack of safety for women.
