Israeli research into murders of 15 doctors in Gaza finds ‘professional failures’ – National | Globalnews.ca

An Israeli investigation into the murders of 15 Palestinian Medici last month in Gaza by Israeli troops said on Sunday that it was “professional failures” and a deputy commander will be dismissed.

Israel first claimed that the doctors of the doctors had no emergency signals when troops opened fire but later returned. Video of mobile phones recovered from one of the doctors in contradiction with the first account of Israel.

The military investigation showed that the deputy battalion commander, “because of a bad night view,” assessed that the ambulances belonged to Hamas militants. Video images obtained from the incident show that the ambulances let lights blink and logos were visible while they stopped to help another ambulance that came under fire earlier. The teams do not seem to act unusually or in a threatening way as three doctors come up and go there.

Their vehicles immediately come under a barrel of gunfire that continues for more than five minutes with short breaks.

Bodies were buried in a mass grave

Eight Red Crescent staff, six civil defense workers and a UN employee were killed in the shooting for dawn on March 23 by troops performing operations in Tel Al-Sultan, a district of the southern city of Gaza Rafah. Troops bulldozed about the bodies with their mutilated vehicles and bury them in a mass grave. UN and rescue employees could only reach the site a week later to dig out the bodies.

The head of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society has said that the men were ‘up close’.

The Israeli military investigation said that the investigation “did not find any evidence to support claims of implementation or that one of the deceased was bound before or after the shooting.”

It said that the Palestinians were killed because of an “operational misunderstanding” by Israeli troops, and that a separate incident 15 minutes later, when Israeli soldiers shot a Palestinian UN vehicle, a violation of orders.

The deputy commander who will be fired was the first to open the fire and the rest of the soldiers also started shooting, the investigation said.

Israel accuses Hamas of hiding hunters in ambulances

The investigation showed that the decision to crush the ambulances was wrong, but said there was no attempt to hide the event. Major Gen YOAV Har-Even, responsible for the army investigation branch, said that the bodies and vehicles were removed from the road because the army wanted to use it later that day for an evacuation route.

Har Even said that the army informed international organizations about the shooting that day and helped them find the bodies.

The statement about the findings was concluded by saying that the military of Israel ‘regrets the damage that has been encouraged to harm not involved citizens’. The only survivor was held for research and remains in custody for further interrogation.

The findings of the investigation have been transferred to the military lawyer -general, who can decide whether they submit charges. It is intended as an independent body, with supervision by the attorney general and the Supreme Court of Israel.

There are no external investigations into the murders.

Israel has accused Hamas of moving and hiding his hunters in ambulances and emergency vehicles, as well as in hospitals and other civilian infrastructure, with the argument that strikes justify them. Medical staff largely denies the accusations.

The war in Gaza started when Hamas-conducted militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1200 people, mainly civilians, and the kidnapping of 251. Hamas currently has 59 hostages, 24 of whom believed they were alive.

The offensive of Israel has since killed more than 51,000 Palestinians, mainly women and children, according to the health minister of Gaza, which makes no distinction between citizens and fighters.

The war has destroyed huge parts of Gaza and most of its food production options. About 90 percent of the population is displaced, with hundreds of thousands of people who live in tent camps and bombed buildings.

Frustration has grown on both sides, with rare public protests against Hamas in Gaza and continuous weekly rallies in Israel who press the government to reach a deal to bring all hostages home.
