Islanders beat Senators in overtime 4-3 | Pro Hockey News

Belleville, Ont. – After wrapping up their Canadian road swing, the Bridgeport Islanders took to the ice on Sunday afternoon against the Belleville Senators. Winners of back-to-back games, the Islanders were determined to continue their winning streak against top-ranked Ottawa Senators before heading home for a game Wednesday night. With the match tied in the third period, they went into overtime, with Cole McWard being the hero to win the match in a 4-3 decision.

In the opening period, Liam Foudy set up the first goal of the game when he broke free at 11:14 to beat Jackson Parson’s high blocker squad for a 1-0 lead.

The Isles extended their lead with a goal from a two-man lead after Matthew Maggio’s shot was stopped by Parsons. Matthew Highmore kept pushing and slid the puck into the net 39 seconds into the period. Later, a short-handed goal was scored by Belleville at 1:45 by Jan Jenik that cut the Islanders’ lead to 2-1. Highmore set up another goal for the Isles when he passed it off to defenseman Cole McWard’s stick at 6:32. McWard’s goal gave Bridgeport a 3-1 lead. The Sens answered back with another goal, and it was Arthur Kaliyev at 11:36, making it a 3-2 game.

During the final period of regulation, Lassi Thomson tied the game on the power play at 17:19, making the game 3–3.

In overtime, McWarded scored the game winner by putting the puck into the Senators cage, lifting his team to a 4–3 victory and their third straight win.
