Is your car one of the millions with Takata airbags subject to the ‘Do Not Drive’ warning?

Is your car one of the millions with Takata airbags subject to the ‘Do Not Drive’ warning?

The Takata airbag recall is considered one of the most complicated and extensive in United States history. It officially started in 2008, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates there are 67 million airbags deployed in tens of millions of vehicles in the US alone. When the defective airbags deploy during an accident after prolonged exposure to moisture and high temperatures, they can explode and cause serious injury or even death.

As a result, NHTSA and automakers have issued several recalls over the years, including “Do Not Drive” warnings for specific vehicles, which are at much greater risk of airbags exploding and require immediate repair. However, there are still countless vehicles on the road that have not been repaired, with the most recent reminder coming as Stellantis – Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, etc. – has issued another “Do Not Drive” warning for approximately 225,000 older vehicles. These, together with the risky models from other car manufacturers, are part of the list below, which is identical to the one currently on the NHTSA website:

Eric Stafford’s car addiction started before he could walk, and it’s fueled his passion for writing news, reviews and more for Car and driver since 2016. His childhood ambition was to become a millionaire with a Jay Leno-esque car collection. Apparently getting rich is harder than social media influencers make it seem, so he avoided financial success entirely to become an automotive journalist and drive new cars for a living. After earning a journalism degree from Central Michigan University and working at a daily newspaper, the years of essentially burning money on failed project cars and lemon-flavored jalopies finally paid off when Car and driver hired him. His garage currently has a 2010 Acura RDX, a ’97 manual Chevy Camaro Z/28 and a ’90 Honda CRX Si.
