As you may know, Costco members pay less for gas. But is their gas better or worse than the competition? In this article, we look at Costco’s gas quality in 2025 and discuss why it is competitive. We’ll also look at applicable gasoline standards and discuss some ways to improve Costco gas quality if you’re not convinced.

Cheap gas, yes. But what about Costco gas quality?

According to Consumer Reports.com, warehouse gas prices are typically between 5 and 25 cents per gallon cheaper (here). However, for most consumers, lower prices can often be seen as a signal of lower quality. This could call into question the quality of Costco’s gasoline sold at its 580 gas stations in the United States alone.

The reason Costco’s gas is cheaper is for two reasons. First, Costco is doing a better job at controlling prices in its gasoline business than its competitors. Overall, Costco’s SG&A (selling, general and administrative) expenses are lower than those of Walmart and Target (here). This means they can afford to keep prices low.

Second, Costco’s business philosophy is to provide high-quality goods at competitive prices. So this means that in order to maintain the growth of its business, Costco must sell its gasoline at prices lower than the competition to keep people coming to their warehouse stores. So they sacrifice some profits from their gasoline operations to bring more people to their warehouse locations.

But what about Costco’s gas quality?

Gas quality standards

First, it’s important to note that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets strict standards for all gasoline sold in the United States. When it comes to the octane number and other specific characteristics of gasoline, all gas is basically the same. The difference between the fuel you buy at branded gas stations comes down to the detergents added to the gas.

Gasoline is in fact an impure substance refined from impure base oil: crude oil. This means it’s messy from a molecular chemistry point of view. And as a result, you leave some gasoline sloshing around the fuel injectors and intake valves. This can increase and decrease engine efficiency. To mitigate this, fuel manufacturers add detergents or chemicals to break down semi-solids in gasoline. Detergents are typically amine-based or alcohol-based (ethanol), sulfur- or zinc-based chemicals with polar and non-polar groups in their molecular structure.

Even when it comes to detergents, the government sets standards. The federal government has required since 1995 that all gasoline sold in the US must contain a certain amount of detergent additives. These additives are EPA approved and the amount of detergent that must be added to keep vehicle engines free of deposits is regulated. Costco gas checks all these boxes, despite being so much cheaper than surrounding stations. So just because you save money doesn’t mean they’ve skirted or circumvented regulations.

Is Costco Gas as good as its competitors?

So Costco meets the EPA’s minimum requirements, but also meets more stringent components set by the auto manufacturers.

A number of automakers concluded that the U.S. government’s additive requirement was not high enough for many cars. As a result, they developed a ‘Top Tier’ standard. To meet the “Top Tier” designation, the fuel sold at the gas station must meet additive requirements higher than those required by the U.S. government. here. Costco fuel meets this top standard.

So Costco gasoline is pretty much the same as other major gasoline brands in that it meets both EPA and industry standards. You shouldn’t notice a difference when filling up your vehicle at Costco like you would with any other brand. The only difference you should notice is a lighter hit on the wallet.

Additionally, Costco has strict filter requirements for their fuel, according to their website:

Station maintenance Proper operation and maintenance of the station means that the fuel is filtered and that contaminants, such as sediment and water, do not enter our members’ vehicles. Costco gas stations are well maintained by our skilled staff so you can trust that the fuel going into your vehicle is clean.

  • Costco uses fuel filters to capture particles or debris larger than 10 microns in diameter. For comparison, the average human hair is seventy microns thick.
  • Our staff regularly checks the nozzle flow to ensure our filters are fresh. When the flow rate drops below 8 gallons per minute, we replace the filter.
  • Costco uses ethanol-compatible filters designed to capture sediment, water, or phase-separated ethanol and water mixtures.
  • Costco’s electronic sensors continuously monitor our underground storage tanks for water.
  • We inspect and take chemical samples of our tanks at least weekly to confirm that there is no contamination.
