Over the past decade, three-wheeled motorcycles, also known as trike motorcycles, have steadily become more popular on the world’s roads. While still not like regular motorcycles, it is a lot less unusual to see one drive past you on the highway. There are three-wheelers with a surprising amount of horsepower, and more than a few are made by big brands like Harley-Davidson. Despite the association with a child’s bicycle, there’s something appealing about three-wheelers, whether it’s their muscular backs or the big wheels. It’s a very ‘Road Warrior’ image, and it’s understandable that you might be drawn to it if you’re considering taking up driving yourself.
However, despite this trike association, three-wheelers are not inherently easier to ride than traditional two-wheeled motorcycles. Three-wheelers have a number of attractive points for seasoned riders, especially in terms of comfort and general stability, but they also have several risks and shortcomings, not to mention a distinct learning curve that can deter newcomers and experienced riders alike. Whether or not a three-wheeler is a good investment largely depends on who you ask, and when it comes to the opinions of bikers we’ve seen on the motorcycle subreddit and YouTube, there are arguments for and against.
Tricycles are attractive because of their comfort and stability
According to YouTuber Sandman drivesThe biggest advantages of riding a tricycle are comfort and stability. The obvious advantage of three wheels instead of two is that you don’t have to struggle to balance the vehicle, whether you’re driving or standing still. You just lean back and steer, and the whole thing stays level. The wider backrest also includes a wider seat, making it more comfortable to sit on your back and buttocks for longer. That wider seat also reduces the amount of effort you have to put forth with your waist and legs, which helps maintain endurance on a long ride.
Tricycles can be an especially useful option for people who have trouble moving their lower back, waist or knees. The reduced physical effort makes it a type of riding option that more people can enjoy. As an added bonus, three-wheelers often have a built-in trunk or storage space, unlike the complete lack of dedicated space on most traditional motorcycles.
It can be difficult for experienced riders to learn to ride tricycles again
When you look at the thoughts on three-wheelers from motorcycle YouTubers and the users of the motorcycle subreddit, one word that comes up often is “weird.” The design of a three-wheeled motorcycle does not allow you to steer and maneuver it in the same way as a traditional motorcycle. You can’t lean into your turns and you can’t counter-steer the steering wheel. Essentially, you have to steer a three-wheeler in the same way as you would a car, which can be disorienting for seasoned riders who are already used to steering in the usual manner. A Reddit user noted that three-wheeled motorcycles, unlike two-wheelers, can handle tight turns at high speed almost as well.
In fact, according to some Reddit usersone of the biggest risks of tricycles is rolling. If you try to steer a three-wheeler into the same tight corner as a traditional motorcycle, you’re more likely to throw the whole thing on its side. Because the saddle and the back are wider, it can also be a bit more difficult to jump out of the bike in an emergency.
Essentially, riding a three-wheeler is not that difficult if you are relatively new to motorcycling. If you’ve spent most of your life on traditional bikes, you’ll have to break a lot of habits and learn a lot of new rules, which can be frustrating, and the skills you learned on a three-wheeler won’t transfer to a traditional bike if you decide to switch.
