In his statement on Wednesday, the IRFU said that an assessment concluded that the SEVENS program for men “does not contribute as a development path for the XVS game”, adding that the provincial academy structures offer “larger development opportunities”.

“The financial situation we are confronted with is a challenge, and it is crucial that we take decisive action to secure the success in the long term of Irish rugby,” said David Humphreys, director of Irfu.

“Although the decision to end the SEVENS program of the men is difficult, it is necessary to ensure that our resources are focused on the areas that have the greatest impact on the future of the game in Ireland.

“We are committed to ensure that this transition to the greatest respect is treated for anyone who has contributed to the success of the SEVENS program.”

The Sevens side of the men played their last tournament in Los Angles earlier this month, finished 11th and suffered relegation in the SVNS series of the World.

They reached two Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 and last summer in Paris and finished 10th in Japan and sixth in France.

Ulster Trio Nick Timoney, Robert Baloucoune and Zac Ward all played for the Sevens side of Ireland, just like established Ireland 15s International Tadgh Beirne.

Ward, next to Leinster and Ireland 15S International Hugo Keenan, can be seen in the Sevens Olympics Squad in Paris.

Irfu CEO Kevin Potts said that he was “very proud” on everything that the Sevens side has achieved.

“We want to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the SEVENS program for men, especially when reaching the qualification for the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games.

“Their relentive dedication, hard work and skills played a crucial role in increasing the profile of Sevens Rugby in Ireland.”
