Ireland delivered an extensive all -round performance on Saturday 26 July to beat Zimbabwe By 97 runs in the opening one-day international of their two-match series. The impressive victory at home leaves the Touring Zimbabwean side still looking for their first White-Ball victory. The top order of Ireland laid a strong foundation, which pushed them to a competitive total, which turned out to be too formidable for the wrestling Batting-Line-Up of Zimbabwe to chase.

The Batting -Thressness of Ireland sets a high target

After he was asked to hit first, the openers of Ireland, Sarah Forbes (54) and Captain Gaby Lewis (51), set the tone with an impressive 116-run partnership, frustrating the Zimbabwean bowlers. While Lewis, the more aggressive of the two, left shortly after her fifty, Forbes continued her strong show, and added a fast 40 runs in just 5.1 overs besides Amy Hunter. Hunter himself contributed a solid 43 of 38 deliveries and missed closely for half a century. Orla Prendergast Maintained the scores speed with a Quickfire 52 out of 52 balls before it was stunned. Laura Delany’s Run-A-Ball 34 led Ireland beyond the 250-run mark. Despite a late collapse, where Ireland lost their last six wickets for only 35 runs, so they would not violate the 300-run marking, their final total of 288/9 was an important challenge.

Zimbabwe’s top-order collapse turns out to be expensive

The target of 289 runs immediately looked daunting for Zimbabwe when their top order crumbled under pressure. Orla Prendergast, in the lead role also with the ball, hit twice in successive overs during her opening spell, which reduced Zimbabwe to a precarious 17/2. Towards the end of the powerplay, they faltered at 34/3. Skipper Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano (68) and beloved Biza tried a recovery with a resilient 68-run position, making the wickets stream for almost 12 overs. Lara McBride’s crucial Twin Strikes, however, ignited another collapse, because Zimbabwe lost four wickets for only 39 runs. Despite an undefeated 32 of 71 balls from Runyararo Pasipanodya, which kept them mathematically in the competition until the penultimate convincing damage turned out to be insurmountable for the visitors.
