‘Lakemba House’ at 14 Chelmsford Ave, Ipswich is on the market.

A well-known Federation Queenslander has hit the market after 14 years, with the owners ready to pass on their childhood dream home to a new family.

Jason and Simone Hubbard have launched ‘Lakemba House’ in Ipswich, west of Brisbane.

The house was seller Jason Hubbard’s dream home for years before he bought it.

The popular home was the dream home of Mr. Hubbard from his childhood, long before he could ever imagine owning it.

“I grew up in Ipswich and have followed the journey of this house all my life,” Mr Hubbard said.

“It was always the one on the mound.

“Owning it was a dream, something I hoped for from a young age.”

For the Hubbards, the house was also the backdrop to family life.

The property has attracted statewide attention over the years, including on Queensland Weekender, after Ms Hubbard helped coordinate Ipswich’s award-winning heritage open-home program in partnership with the National Trust of Australia (Queensland).

“We moved from Brisbane to Ipswich to grow our family,” Ms Hubbard said.

“Our children were part of this house from day one – painting, gardening, climbing mango trees, running laps around the formal garden. Some of our best memories took place here – and we have an outdoor photo slide to showcase these wonderful memories.

“There are only a handful of these types of houses left.

“And even fewer sitting so high, in this condition, in this position.”

Situated on one of the highest residential points in Ipswich, Lakemba is one of the city’s most recognizable character homes, with breathtaking views over Ipswich, as far as Mt Coot-tha, the D’Aguilar Range, and even fireworks over Brisbane City on clear nights.

Built around 1902 by prominent local builder William Betts, Lakemba is a rare surviving example of a grand Federation Queenslander with cast iron verandas and multiple bays to the front – a style now almost extinct on elevated positions such as Denmark Hill.

There is plenty of space to relax and unwind.

Previously owned by the extended Cribb family, one of Ipswich’s most influential families, the house has long been embedded in the town’s social and architectural history.

The house has been carefully renovated for modern family living, with a design-led update that respects the Federation architecture whilst offering scale, flexibility and everyday functionality; at a time when very few houses of this caliber on Denmark Hill were in such a meticulously maintained condition.

‘Lakemba House’ is well known in Ipswich.

It has regularly featured in heritage programs including the Great Houses of Ipswich, reinforcing its reputation as a local landmark.

Now that their children are older, the couple have decided to downsize, opening the door for a new family to take over one of Ipswich’s most recognizable addresses.

Officer Paris Arthur of Place Graceville said the house attracted a lot of attention.

“This is not just a prestige house,” Mr. Arthur said.

“Lakemba is part of Ipswich’s identity.

“Houses with this level of recognition, sublimity and history simply do not exist.”

“People know this house.

“They remember.

“And when something so iconic hits the market, it gets attention.”

“Because there is really nothing comparable to Lakemba, we deliberately chose to turn it into an offer campaign,” says Arthur.

Lakemba is on sale via Top Offers and closes on February 4.
