– The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a recall of the Dodge Dart shift cables failed to fix the cars the first time, but a second recall completed the job.
In June, NHTSA opened a federal investigation into an August 2019 recall due to problems with the shift cable bushings in the 2013-2016 Dodge Darts.
The Dart shift cable bushings fell apart and came loose from the automatic transmissions.
If the cable becomes loose, the gear indicator may no longer match the Dodge Dart driver’s intended gear selection.
This can cause the car to roll away even though the Dart driver thinks the transmission is in PARK.
According to Fiat Chrysler, the shift cable bushings were damaged by oil, solvents and other chemicals that corrode the bushings.
However, NHTSA received 63 complaints about problems with the shift cables or about car releases that were supposedly repaired during the shift cable recall. This caused safety regulators to question the recall repairs and convinced them to open an investigation into the recall of the Dart shift cable bushings from more than 300,000 cars.
Chrysler then announced a new recall for the Dart shift cable bushings in October for more than 300,000 model year 2013-2016 Dodge Darts. The automaker is working on an improved design, but Chrysler dealers will replace the Dart shift cables once the new designs are approved.
NHTSA says it will continue to monitor any complaints about problems with the Dodge Dart’s shift cables, but for now the latest recall has convinced regulators to close the investigation.
