Some international tire manufacturers will offer help with the inspection process and the authenticity of nearly 18,000 tires taken up in a massive operation by the Malaysian Anti-corruption Commission (MACC) earlier this week.
In the operation with the name OPS Grip, 17,672 tires were seized as a result of a simultaneous raid at 23 locations in the Klang Valley, Penang and Johor. The RAID focuses on companies that are suspected of doing tire smuggling activities, as well as the falsification of import and export documents. It is assumed that the activity has led to a loss of government tax income from RM350 million since 2020.
OPS GRIP was run by a special task force, including various government agencies that focus on tire import companies. The operation included a raid on various warehouses and tire storage containers, as well as further action of the MACC that also frozen various individual banking accounts and companies that were worth around RM70 million.
According to a source that is not mentioned and quoted by DeclaredA joint inspection of international tire manufacturers was carried out to identify the status and purity of the seized tires. The first study showed that these smuggling guarantees consisted of different categories, including new tires that were not declared correctly, used tires and tires that did not meet the safety standards.
The source also informed that the smuggling activity was monitored by the MACC for almost six months before the mass operation was performed. Research showed that the syndicate had submitted inaccurate import documents, including the declaration of false value, product classification of crimes or quality certificate for quality, to reduce the amount to be paid.
So far, no arrests have been made and investigations are still underway with the focus of detecting and seizing other assets that are assumed to be obtained by money laundering.
