Inter hammer Union on a night full of big scores in the Champions League – Inside World Football

October 22 – Inter Milan maintained their perfect record in the Champions League group stages with a convincing 4-0 win at Belgian side Union St. Gilloise.

Last season’s defeated finalists defeated the Belgian champions with goals from Denzel Dumfries, Lautaro Martinez, Hakan Çalhanoglu and Francesco Esposito. It was the third win in a row for Inter Milan after victories over Ajax Amsterdam and Slavia Prague. Union was left red-faced after a second 4-0 home defeat. The Brussels team hurt Inter in the transition phase, but the Italians defeated Union in the last five minutes with their attacking power. In the 41st minute, Denzel Dumfries bundled the ball from close range and five minutes later Lautaro Martinez picked out the top corner after being overtaken by Dumfries.

There was no more comeback for Union, who were similarly 2-0 down at half-time against Newcastle United in their first home game of the campaign. In the 53rd minute, Hakan Çalhanoglu added a third from the penalty spot. With Union no longer able to cover the spaces, Inter dominated and Francesco Esposito scored a fourth for the Italians to round off a comfortable evening in the Belgian capital.

After three games, Inter are in second place on goal difference behind Paris Saint-Germain with nine points. In two weeks’ time, Inter will host Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty at the San Siro, while Union will travel to Atletico Madrid, who were also on the tail end of a 4-0 defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday.

It was a night full of big scores in the Champions League. PSG defeated Bayer Leverkusen 7-2 in Germany, Barcelona defeated Olympiakos 6-2 and PSV defeated Napoli 6-2. A total of 43 goals were scored in the nine games.
