Newcastle 3 PSV 0 – Wednesday January 21, 2026 8:00 PM

Direct fan/writer response from some of our regular contributors to The Mag.

Nat Seaton:

‘Another great European evening at SJP, I will never take these evenings for granted.

Three more goals from our numbers 9, 10 and 11 and another European clean sheet.

Good performances all around, worrying about Bruno with the games we have coming up.

Let Aston Villa come with this great victory on Sunday!’

Billy Miller:

‘Can we play against you every week?

PSV’s playing style was perfect for us and we forced several mistakes.

VAR did its best to spoil things early and credit to the referee who took just one look to ignore their bizarre intervention.

Joelinton looks back to his imperious best and it was refreshing to see all our starting three players scoring the goals.

We go into the final match with our fate in our own hands. We owe PSG!’

GTone:

“You’d have to go way up the pyramid to find a league where they would be at the top. I’ve never seen a team so scared of us.

If you can watch the match again, watch 34 minutes of a ball being played in the air and Joelinton running towards their player. He just goes out and runs. Hilarious!

As for us, I don’t think we ever reached the heights, but we didn’t have to.

Their team breathed a collective sigh of relief when Joelinton came on.

Wissa looked good today. Gordon was there and Hall was excellent again. Too bad about Bruno, but we have Captain Miley to intervene.

Also a pity that Eddie didn’t give one of the young boys a few minutes at the end, when they didn’t even want to come into our half.

Successful passes were 78%. You can ask Botman about the other 22%.’

Matt Busby said…:

‘What an achievement. What a result.

That’s two more games to add to our already demanding schedule. Whether it’s in the last 16 of the Champions League or not depends on what we do next week at the Parc de Princes.

Then there’s the small matter of the second leg of the League Cup semi-final.

What did I just write? What a time to be a Newcastle United fan!

Lewis Hall excellent. Wissa sharper than we’ve ever seen. Barnes will tear you apart again.

A zero for the back five. Elanga looks lively. Gordon with another goal on the big stage. Lewis Miley captain chosen. The only downside was that Bruno went off.

And what about the VAR? Instead of “Go to the monitor and overrule your decision on the pitch, boy”, it was a case of “You might want to check your decision, boy”, to which the referee’s response was: “Yes, I did, and I’m not turning”. Watch out Howard Webb!’

David Punton:

‘An excellent victory, which paves the way for progress in the Champions League.

A nice distraction.

This was a much better team effort. We put pressure on PSV and they cracked.

Joelinton was excellent tonight and everyone seemed to have a better game.

You feel like we had to win this one to make sure we had a chance of going through to the next round.

PSV gift-wrapped the first two goals – which was a nightmare for them.

Harvey Barnes did brilliantly for the third and in defense Sven Botman looks back to his best.

The only negative tonight seems to be an apparent ankle injury for Bruno.”

Tony Mallabar:

My pre-match analysis normally consists of what time pint glasses are swapped for plaque glasses at Bar Loco.

So today we discovered that PSV had won sixteen times in a row on home soil, beating Luckypool 4-1 and Napoli 6-2…

I was very disappointed with their timid actions.

Mind you, the 3-0 certainly didn’t flatter us as Joelinton played his best game of the season (in my opinion).

So next Tuesday we go to France with the sincere hope of a place in the top 8.

Hopefully Bruno’s injury isn’t too bad, but Tonali looks devastated and perhaps time to give young Mileycastle a chance in his favored midfield spot against Villa on Sunday.’

Mark Jankowski:

“I felt pretty confident going into tonight and that confidence wasn’t misplaced.

PSV made it difficult in the first half with aggressive press, but we still took a 2-0 lead.

PSV looked well defeated at the end of the second half and Newcastle enter the final matchday in the top 8.

The only black spot on the evening was a sprained ankle for Bruno.

Hopefully it’s nothing serious, but we’ll worry about that tomorrow.’
