Burnley 1 Newcastle 3 – 30 December 2025 7.30pm
Newcastle United fan/writer response from some of our regular contributors to The Mag.
Nat Seaton:
‘I’m going for the win, even though we played better this season and lost!
Three points on the road is always a great result, but sometimes we made it difficult for ourselves.
Had plenty of chances to win the match but the finishing was poor at times, look away Jacob Murphy!
Travel home happy for a change.’
Greg McPeake:
Jamie Smith:
‘Still some holes in the performance, it felt like a Burnley equalizer had been nailed on for a while, but a necessary away win to hopefully change the narrative.
Two very welcome returns for the team, Joelinton putting in a classic performance and Nick Pope making some important saves that might have come in during his absence.
I have to be happy with an away win ahead of a January spent mainly at SJP.
Form looks so much better with Wissa and chances are this will gel in the coming weeks.
A happy ending to a memorable year for NUFC.’
Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey…:
‘O Martin Dubravka!
After a blistering start, scoring twice in the opening seven minutes, we made heavy work of only our second PL win on the road this season.
After conceding, Wissa and Barnes missed golden opportunities to restore our two-goal lead before the break, which would have made the second half a little more bearable.
During a frantic 60 seconds on the hour mark we had our luck when Pope made two great saves before their goal scorer hit the crossbar.
Their MOTM was Marcus Edwards and he was also a constant threat to Dubravka’s howler, allowing Bruno to secure all three points in stoppage time.’
Tony Mallabar:
‘On the bus back home and what a relief.
Many people watching us will give a more tactical and analytical summary of the game. But for me, watching Dubravka’s mistake for our third goal reminded me of karma.
The blasting ends tonight, a special mention for Bruno G.
Oh and by the way… the clown of the year award went to our favorite Mag quarter, the Monk.”
GTone:
‘It’s all about the win.
Coincidentally, as a famous DJ used to say, that was pretty bad as far as wins go.
For a long time we were outplayed and tactically outmaneuvered (what’s going on, Eddie?), but we managed not to give in.
Some of our players were great (Hall), but that ability didn’t extend further to the left as Gordon was terrible.
And what’s going on with Tonali? He is miles off the pace. Still bad?
Anyway. Three points.
Great to see Crazy Joe again. He made a big difference tonight, just like Pope.”
David Punton:
‘A much-needed victory, but sometimes it was difficult against relegation fodder.
Only we could make a 0-2 lead look difficult.
Eddie Howe got the result he needed tonight, but I’ll be harsh – we still need to do a lot better.
With the players we have, we have to hold the ball better.
That said, it was done tonight.”
Billy Miller:
‘I’m starting to forget what a comfortable win looks like.
We blasted our way into a two goal lead but let Burnley back in and the second half was tough.
Credit to Burnley, they gave us one game but it would have been nice to play three or four and get the chance to blood some young players.
With all the debate surrounding our goalkeepers it was our former goalkeeper with a big blunder who late on confirmed the victory for us.
A relief to see Lewis Hall recovering from injury twice. If he’s not already our best player, he’s certainly the most consistent.”
Simon Ritter:
‘Points mean prizes.
Newcastle United have not earned nearly enough on their travels this season, but at Turf Moor they dominated the early stages and were 2-0 up after just six minutes for the first time in the Premier League.
Burnley, battling relegation, turned the match into a physical battle, aided by an overly lenient referee who continually waved away fouls when possession was retained, although there was often no advantage. Is this another PGMOL edict?
Nick Pope justified his recall with some top class saves, our international midfielders all had an impact and Bruno Guimaraes sealed the win with a sublime late finish.
Teams above us dropped points.
If you count a Champions League place as a prize, like I do, then we are still in the hunt.’
