Instagram is Expanding his controversial friends card function to IndiaWhile it also rolls out a number of new updates to tackle concerns about involuntary location -parts in the app.

Instagram launched his Friend Map -function in the US in August for the first time, with which users can see where their IG connections are on a map at a certain moment.

As you can see in these examples, you can make the map function available via your inbox notes feed, to see where your friends are and what they are planning, with a constant track from their location on the map, if they have chosen it.

Although the latter point was apparently not made clear, which caused a whole series of concern about sharing locations, and how this can facilitate all kinds of stalking-type via the app via the app.

Many users suggested that Instagram had immediately started showing their location without permission, which Instagram stated was not the case. The function is opt-in and is switched off by default, although there was apparently some confusion about earlier permissions for sharing locations and placing location-based public stories, which led to many people showing their location on the map when they might not have wanted it.

Instagram has since then Various interpretations issued about thisAnd has now also added some new provisions to cover the worries of users:

  • To make it clearer if you share your location on the map, you will now see a more prominent, persistent indicator at the top of the map that you remember whether or not you share the location, or whether you have completely switched off your device location. There is also an indicator under your profile photo in the notes drawer that clarifies if you do not share your location.
  • We also heard from people who thought that sharing content with a tagged location meant that they shared their location on the map. We have removed profile photos from the content of the content to help clarify that it is not someone’s location.
  • Moreover, we show an educational memory that when you add a location to a story, reel or mail, it will populate it on the map.
  • Finally, to reduce the confusion about how your location conditions content appears on the map, we have added a preview to show you what your content looks like on the map when you add a location to your Instagram content.

So Instagram now tries to be more explicit in how the map display works, to prevent confusion and to ensure that people do not feel that they unintentionally expose their location in the app if they don’t want to.

That should illuminate most of the worries, and now Indian users will also be able to see their friends on the Instagram card, which suggests that IG is confident enough that these updates have reached all the important concerns and have opened the door for an extensive rollout.

As such you can also expect the Friends card to be available in more regions soon.
