In 2017 I fell in love with Pet soundsAnd I have to admit – that’s a bit weird. I am old enough to have seen the Ramones perform live, but I am not that That old. For me, the beach boys was music that just existed a bit in the background. Something my parents taped on their fingers on the wheel when we were stuck in traffic. Not something I loved or hated, something that was always there.
But lately I have thought a lot about things that always seem to have existed – mobile phones, Batman, America – and here is the thing, they didn’t do that! Someone, or a group of people, has made these things out of nowhere. They had an idea and went to work.
I am not a music critic, but listen to songs like “God only knows” and “wouldn’t it be fun” with fresh ears, I couldn’t stop thinking: “What did he even think of doing that?” There are not many top hits before or after “sloop john b” with texts about eating all the corn of a ship’s mate that I can think of, right? You start to understand why the “brilliant” word is thrown in the direction of Brian Wilson and why it lingers.
I grabbed the opportunity to see Brian Wilson in the fall of 2017, alongside Beach Boys co-founder Al Jardine and a great backing band, play the entire groundbreaking album track from Track in Radio City Music Hall. (Additional Pet Sounds: The Final Performances Tour Dates Found here.) Hearing these songs live – more than 50 years after the man who was in the piano she heard in his head for the first time – was incredible and inspiring. I didn’t leave the theater for sure that in my life I can create something that remains relevant and groundbreaking for half a century, but for sure that I will not stop trying.
