The tension surrounding Rasmus Andersson trade chatter has ratcheted up a notch in recent days, and from the sounds of it, we might be on the verge of a deal.
Reports from the likes of Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman have suggested that both Andersson and the Flames would like to find a solution before the Olympic break, and according to a Flames insider, it could come sooner rather than later.
Radio voice Pat Steinberg revealed on the Flames Talk podcast Tuesday night that an Andersson trade could very well happen in the next 24 to 48 hours, and even if it doesn’t, it’s not far away.
Steinberg said:
“I really believe tomorrow is the ideal time to do that. I’ll be very honest with you, if it happened in the next 24 to 48 hours, I wouldn’t be surprised at this point. From what I’m hearing, it feels like the volume has been turned up again in the last 12 to 24 hours. It doesn’t mean a deal is imminent, but when I hear what you’re hearing from people you talk to around the league, I wonder if we’re heading to a window where it’s not that far is gone,”
The 29-year-old is in the midst of a rebound season offensively and has already collected 29 points (10 goals, 19 assists) in just 46 games. He is, of course, a UFA awaiting the sixth and final season of the six-year, $27.3 million extension he signed with the Flames in 2020.
Teams against Rasmus Andersson
Interest in Andersson remains high, with almost every conceivable lottery contender involved.
Fourth-period insider David Pagnotta recently mentioned Detroit, Toronto, Dallas, Vegas, Florida and even Colorado are among those poking around Andersson. Speculation has increased recently, especially around the Red Wings.
Flames GM Craig Conroy won’t settle for anything less than a significant haul in exchange for his prized trade chip, which could ultimately take some suitors out of the race.
That said, there are still plenty of teams with the resources and cap space to meet the Flames’ demands, so Andersson should be able to find a new home for himself any day now.
