The Detroit Red Wings have recently emerged as one of the top candidates for Quinn Hughes if and when Vancouver decides to pull the plug and trade their captain.
No team will ever match or surpass the New Jersey Devils in terms of Hughes’ preferred landing spot, and that’s understandable. That said, if anyone can stay in second place, it’s Detroit, where he played college hockey for the University of Michigan and where he and his family live and spend time in the summers.
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman has said he expects the Red Wings to be fully in the mix for Hughes, although after some speculation gained traction online, he made sure to mention that star forwards Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond won’t be apart of a potential trade package back to the Canucks.
said Friedman:
“I really think Detroit will be a potential fit if the time ever comes…I started talking about centers and the Red Wings fans are like he’s talking about Larkin. I wasn’t talking about Larkin. I don’t think there will be a deal between Quinn Hughes and Dylan Larkin. When the time comes, or if the time comes, I do believe Detroit will be a player, but I don’t think it will be for Raymond or Larkin,”
The 26-year-old Hughes is in the fifth year of the six-year, $47.1 million extension he signed with the Canucks in 2021, which would give any acquiring team his services two playoff runs before potentially hitting free agency after 2026-27.
Who could the Detroit Red Wings move for Quinn Hughes?
While Larkin and Raymond are both off the table, the question becomes who is an option for the Canucks to make a deal by sending Hughes to Detroit?
Friedman went on to say that the Red Wings’ young centers are intriguing for Vancouver, which would lead you to believe that the likes of Marco Kasper and Nate Danielson could play a role. Young defender Axel Sandin-Pellikka could also be an interesting name for Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin, who are looking to get younger.
The question still remains whether a Hughes trade will actually come to fruition during the 2025-2026 season. But if that’s the case, very few teams in the NHL have the assortment of young players, prospects and draft picks to pull off such a blockbuster than Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings.
